Programs Schools: Poetry Samples
Here are just a few examples of the kinds of poems that kids have written and rapped at the conclusion of a TLP residency (during a show for their entire school). 5TH GRADE, BY EMILY, TESA & KELLI I can tell the world is ending, I can see it now So I consulted mother nature with a smile and a bow I said, "I know we hurt this planet by running cars And if we ruin it we can't even go to Mars" CHORUS: Get in the recycling mood Recycle, reduce, yo reuse That's all you gotta do Recycle, reduce, reuse It's now raining every day With big gray clouds and lots of storms People can see it from their houses, Mansions and from their dorms CHORUS: Get in the recycling mood Recycle, reduce, yo reuse That's all you gotta do Recycle, reduce, reuse Everyone throws stuff away But some scraps are good to save Make some compost big and wide And make plant food when they dried! Instead of cars how 'bout a birch canoe? If you want to save your planet it's quite simple Just start to recycle you and all the other people!" 2ND GRADE (a class poem) We need to keep the whole Earth clean! Whatcha gonna do? Let's go green! Don't run loose usin' up your juice! We need to make a change...Reuse, Reduce! Let's get ride of toxic waste, And that just might solve the case! Toxic? Box it! Don't throw it in the dumps! Dumps just make bad Earth bumps! Please don't cut the rain forest down! We need all that green to come around! Let's go green, and make the Earth clean... Respect! Respect! That's what we mean! --------------------------------------------

We got skillz to pay the billz that all we got We're doing it with trash whether you know it or not We don't play by the rules even though you shouldn't Try to play like them I know you wouldn't Most of our stuff came from the dump We don't need drum sets for all you chumps We make beats out of pots and pans We use anything that we got on hand We make sound with old flippy floppies When you put 'em together with old pipe toppies We're the best of the best no one stands in our way If they do, heck with you, we'll blow you away Our beats are like fire so don't burn up When Jeff says 'Yo', you say 'Sup' I got all my homies plain' on that trash So give it up for DMac's class! -------------------------------------------- 4TH GRADE STUDENT Untitled My name is Brandon & I'm here to say That picking up trash is the newest way It may sound silly but kid it's true The future of our earth lay in the hands of you! Grasses gotta be green--the water blue. Anytime's good, but today's your cue. Yo! Turn yourself around! Go! Recycle your bottles, recycle your cans Take your old paper and make it into fans! Jump up and down! Yo! Turn yourself around! Go! Don't pollute the sea with balloons and nails! 'Cause we wanta save the dolphins, And we wanta save the whales! Jump up and down! Yo! Turn yourself around! Go! Keep the ocean clean for the turtles, birds and fish! Don't let go of a styrofoam dish! Jump up and down! Yo! Turn yourself around! Go! Reusing is good, waste is bad! I know you want to get in a good college So let's get goin', let's get some knowledge Social studies, language arts and arithmetic Let's go study now, quick quick quick YOU CAN GET THERE IN A BUS; YOU CAN GET THERE IN A CAR BUT YOU BETTER GET THERE OR YOU WON'T GO FAR! Because I know that if you believe Some day, some how, you will succeed School is hard, yeah, it is tough And together we'll get through this stuff! YOU CAN GET THERE IN A BUS; YOU CAN GET THERE IN A CAR BUT YOU BETTER GET THERE OR YOU WON'T GO FAR! --------------------------------------------- 4TH GRADE (A CLASS POEM) Oil Spills Oil spills will make you ill They can go through fishes gills Seals and dolphins loose their homes All because of dangerous foam Ducks and gulls dive for fish But they can't get their wish It coats their quills so black and thick The oil has made them sick Oysters, clams, and starfish too Can be poisoned by this goo! Penguins can get really scared From the oil that is everywhere Beaches close and kids are sad The oil scum makes no one glad Careful, careful as you go Or you might pollute the waters You never know... 4TH GRADE (A CLASS POEM) Untitled LITTERING IS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO YOU SHOULD PICK UP YOUR TRASH AND RECYCLE TOO SO TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND OTHERS TOO RECYCLING IS THE THING TO DO!!! As you're walking down the street Don't throw trash at your feet That is litter - don't make me repeat Trash does not belong on our street So please keep our world nice & neat! LITTERING IS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO YOU SHOULD PICK UP YOUR TRASH AND RECYCLE TOO SO TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND OTHERS TOO RECYCLING IS THE THING TO DO!!! When it comes to litter Don't be a kidder If we're not recycling Our world will turn bitter So all you Can Kickers, Gum Spitters And cigarette flickers... Do not litter! When we saw a piece of trash and threw it away. We walked further down and it wasn't so clean. Who in this world would be so mean? Bottles, cans, newspapers too. Then we realized we could turn it into new. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Reduce, Reuse, Recycle R-E-C-Y-C-L-E R-E-C-Y-C-L-E Recycle, recycle keep the earth clean Recycle, recycle work as a team The world will look yucky if we keep it all mucky...
